12-year-old Luke Mortimer, Pride of Britain, commits to 'giving back'

Luke Mortimer, a 12-year-old boy from Skipton, who had a quadruple amputation due to meningitis, has won the Pride of Britain Child of Courage award. He had his lower arms and lower legs amputated at the age of seven in 2019. Luke and his family have raised significant funds for charity, leading judges to commend his determination.

Luke expressed his desire to continue giving back to those who supported him and others in need. He was surprised with the award by Hollywood actor Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson during a visit to London with his father, Adam. Luke humorously questioned why Johnson was bringing room service when he arrived to announce the award.

Luke, who spent six months in Sheffield Children's Hospital, highlighted the challenge of relearning basic skills at a young age. Despite the difficulties, he remains positive and focused on the future. Luke's father praised his son's resilience and positive attitude throughout his journey.

In 2023, Luke climbed Embsay Crag near Skipton, raising over £26,000 for charities supporting amputees. His family also raised funds for prosthetics through various challenges. The award ceremony, attended by Luke and his family, featured celebrities and was broadcast on ITV. Luke humorously remarked on the weight of the award, suggesting it could be melted down to make spoons.
