£600 Fine for Littering Cancelled

£600 Fine for Littering Cancelled

A piece of cardboard found in a street in Haringey prompted the local council to attempt to fine a couple £600.

Francesca Poncetta was identified as the source of the litter near her home through an address label on the cardboard, discovered a few days after the recycling bins were emptied. Ms. Poncetta stated that she always breaks down boxes before disposing of them and believed the wind had blown it away during collection.

Haringey Council emphasized the importance of responsible waste disposal but decided to cancel the fine in this instance.

Ms. Poncetta and her partner, Pierce Rosamond, received a letter notifying them of the £600 fine for failing to properly secure their waste. They expressed their financial constraints and felt the penalty was unfair given their efforts to dispose of waste responsibly.

A spokesperson for Haringey Council acknowledged that mistakes can occur in issuing notices and, after reviewing the case, confirmed the cancellation of the fine.
