ABC halts Jimmy Kimmel show, reminiscent of Roseanne firing

The star of ABC's popular show faced backlash for a controversial comment in May 2018. Roseanne Barr, known for her outspoken views, was swiftly removed from the network after a social media post.

ABC canceled the successful reboot of "Roseanne," a sitcom about the Conner family's struggles. The decision came following Barr's tweet referencing Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama aide, in a racially offensive manner.

Despite Barr's apology, ABC executives deemed her statement unacceptable and canceled the show. Industry unions SAG-AFTRA and WGA protested the decision.

ABC's move to cancel "Roseanne" was compared to the suspension of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" over controversial remarks. The network faced criticism, leading to the temporary removal of Kimmel's show.

Barr criticized the network's actions, suggesting a trend of "cancel culture." Following her dismissal, a spinoff called "The Conners" continued the family's story, addressing social issues like opioid addiction.

In a 2023 interview, Barr expressed feeling persecuted by the network and former colleagues. Despite the show's success, she believed her dismissal was unjust and viewed it as a form of punishment.
