Nigeria's Heavyweights Unite for Election
Nigerian Opposition Leaders Join New Political Party
Nigeria's two main opposition leaders, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Tinubu and his ruling party in the next election.
The ADC is a relatively small party, but it has a good national spread and an active political machinery in each state. The party's interim chairman, David Mark, stated that the coalition aims to save the country's democracy and prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi previously ran for president in 2023 but lost to Tinubu. They believe that if they had worked together, they would have won. This time, they are joining forces to increase their chances of victory.
The ruling APC has already endorsed Tinubu for a second term, despite concerns over his health. Tinubu will be 75 by the next election and 79 if he serves a full second term.
The PDP and Labour Party have ruled out joining the ADC, preferring to face the APC on their own.
