Ancient Roman mosaic unveiled in Colchester after 1,800 years
A Roman mosaic found in Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain, will be exhibited for the first time in 1,800 years. Discovered in the 1980s during construction of a shopping center, the mosaic was fully revealed outside a vape shop in 2023.
The unveiling project at Red Lion Yard, which includes displaying the mosaic under glass, is set to be finished by the second half of next year. Colchester City Council aims to offer a free, year-round attraction in the city center.
Initially found in the 1980s, the mosaic's exposure in 2023 was briefly halted due to the discovery of a high-voltage cable above it. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the mosaic in its original location at Red Lion Yard.
David King, the leader of Colchester City Council, expressed satisfaction with the approval of plans to showcase the Roman mosaic through a glazed paving panel. This move is seen as a significant step in promoting Colchester's history and boosting the local economy through heritage tourism.
