Army sergeant named suspect in Fort Stewart shooting of five

Five American soldiers were injured when an Army sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart military base in Georgia. The soldier, identified as Quornelius Radford, used his personal handgun and targeted his fellow troops. The incident led to a lockdown at the base.

Brigadier General John Lubas confirmed that all five injured soldiers are in stable condition. The alleged attacker was an active-duty soldier who had not been deployed to a combat zone. Other soldiers intervened and subdued the shooter, preventing further harm.

The pistol used was not military-issued, and authorities are investigating how the soldier brought it onto the base. Hinesville Mayor Karl Riles expressed support for those affected, emphasizing the importance of Fort Stewart to the community.

Approximately 15,000 active-duty soldiers are stationed at Fort Stewart, along with 16,000 family members and 4,000 civilian employees. General Lubas revealed that the suspected gunman, Quornelius Radford, is in pre-trial confinement and is being questioned by Army investigators.

The shooting took place at the suspect's workplace and involved his co-workers. Officials do not have a clear motive yet but ruled out any connection to a training event. Radford, a US Army sergeant, is part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart.

The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the soldier obtained a personal weapon on the base. Fort Stewart, located in Hinesville, is the largest US Army base east of the Mississippi River.
