Arsenal Signs Sweden Striker Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres has joined Arsenal after the Gunners defeated his Sporting team 5-1 in the Champions League last season. The 27-year-old Swedish striker signed a five-year contract with Arsenal in a deal worth up to 73 million euros (£64m), including an initial fee of 63 million euros and 10 million euros in add-ons.
Gyokeres cited Arsenal's strong team and playing style, as well as the club's history and fan base, as reasons for choosing to move to the club. Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, praised Gyokeres' qualities and expressed excitement about working with him.
The deal with Sporting concluded negotiations that were led by Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta. Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 games last season, had faced disciplinary action from Sporting for not reporting back for pre-season training.
Gyokeres, who previously played for Brighton and Coventry, has had a successful stint in Portugal, scoring 97 goals in 102 matches and contributing to two league titles for Sporting. He returns to England after a prolific season, including scoring six goals in the Champions League and a hat-trick against Manchester City.
