Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya experienced more disappointment on Wednesday night when he was taken off the field just eight innings into his comeback from injury.

Amaya, a 26-year-old player from Panama, had been out for three months due to a left oblique strain. Despite expressing gratitude for his health the day before, he suffered a fall at first base during the eighth inning of Chicago's game against Toronto.

After the fall, Amaya needed immediate medical attention and was eventually carried off the field on a cart with a towel covering his face.

Having just returned from the injured list a day earlier after being sidelined since May 25, Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that X-rays did not reveal a fracture but noted significant swelling in Amaya's ankle. He stated that Amaya would need to return to the injured list, expressing regret over the situation.

Teammate Cade Horton extended his thoughts and prayers to Amaya, describing him as a valuable player and teammate. Amaya, a third-year catcher, has achieved a .281 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games.

In the game against the Blue Jays, where Chicago won 4-1, Amaya went 1-for-3 before being replaced by Reese McGuire. Carson Kelly is the other catcher on the Cubs' roster.
