Blue Jays Release Manoah, Santander Returns

Toronto Blue Jays Make Unexpected Roster Moves

The Toronto Blue Jays made surprising roster changes ahead of the final week of their 2025 regular season. Anthony Santander was activated from the injured list, while Ty France was placed on the IL due to oblique inflammation. Former All-Star Alek Manoah was designated for assignment, potentially marking the end of his time with the team.

Manoah, who had struggled in recent years and underwent Tommy John surgery, had been a key player for the Blue Jays. Despite his peak performance in 2022, his 2023 season was plagued by command issues and injuries. After a series of minor league starts this year, Manoah's performance did not fully return to form, leading to his designation for assignment.

All 29 teams now have the opportunity to claim Manoah off waivers, potentially having him under contract through 2027. If he clears waivers, he could choose to become a free agent. The Blue Jays are expected to rely on other pitching options for the 2026 season, including Trey Yesavage and Bowden Francis.

The move to designate Manoah made room for Santander on the team's roster. Santander, who had been on the 60-day IL, returned to play in the final games of the regular season. Ty France's placement on the IL opened a spot for Santander on the 26-man roster, with France expected to miss the remainder of the regular season.

The Blue Jays are hopeful that Santander will perform well in the remaining games and potentially earn a spot on the playoff roster. France joins a list of injured players on the team, including Chris Bassitt and Bo Bichette, who may return for the postseason.
