Blue Jays sign top draft pick JoJo Parker to cost-effective deal
Toronto Blue Jays Sign JoJo Parker, No. 8 Pick in 2025 MLB Draft
The Toronto Blue Jays have reached an agreement with JoJo Parker, the eighth pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, according to a team source.
Parker, a high school shortstop, will receive a $6.2 million signing bonus, slightly less than his expected value of $6.81 million. His signing adds one of the top hitting prospects from the draft to Toronto's farm system and allows the team to have more funds to sign other picks from the 2025 draft.
Described as one of the best hitters in the draft class, Parker is praised for his excellent strike zone awareness and contact skills. While he excelled as a shortstop in high school, there are concerns about his defensive abilities that might lead to a position change in the future.
Blue Jays' director of amateur scouting, Marc Tramuta, expressed excitement about acquiring Parker, highlighting his talent and potential impact in the team's future.
At 18 years old, Parker is not expected to join the major league team for several years. He may start playing in the Florida Complex League later this summer, following a development path similar to other high school picks like Arjun Nimmala, who quickly progressed through the minor leagues.
The Blue Jays have also signed pitcher Danny Thompson and outfielder Austin Smith from the 2025 draft, with both players agreeing to contracts below their slot values. These signings, along with Parker's deal, provide Toronto with more flexibility in their bonus pool to attract additional draft selections.
