Borja Sainz Departs Early in Transfer Window

Winger Borja Sainz has transferred from Norwich City to Porto for £14.25m. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with Porto after playing for Norwich for two years.

Sainz was Norwich's top scorer last season with 18 Championship goals, despite missing six games due to a suspension for spitting. He joined Norwich from Giresunspor in Turkey in June 2023.

Norwich's sporting director, Ben Knapper, praised Sainz's impact and performances, calling the move to Porto a positive step in his career. Norwich has signed Denmark international Mathias Kvistgaarden as a replacement for Sainz.

It is uncertain if forward Josh Sargent will also leave the club. Sargent has been linked with a move to Burnley but has three years remaining on his contract with Norwich.

Sainz scored a notable FA Cup goal against Liverpool in January 2024. In his time at Norwich, he scored 16 goals in 20 appearances at the start of the 2024-25 season but experienced a decline in form later on. Sainz received a six-match ban for spitting during a match against Sunderland in December 2024.

Norwich's head coach, Liam Manning, described Sainz's transfer as a beneficial deal for the club, allowing them to strengthen the team. Manning emphasized the focus on preparing the team for upcoming matches and further improving the squad.
