Boston Mayor Wu and Kraft Group Clash Over Proposed Soccer Stadium in Everett

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu criticized the Kraft Group's handling of a proposed soccer stadium for the New England Revolution in Everett during a press conference on Monday. Wu highlighted the lack of information provided by the Kraft Group regarding the stadium's impact on transportation, noise, and job creation.

The Kraft Group aims to build a 25,000-seat stadium on the Mystic River's edge, where a dormant power plant currently stands. Wu expressed concerns that fans would need to navigate through the congested area of Sullivan Square in Charlestown to access the stadium.

Wu noted that the Kraft Group's proposed $750,000 mitigation package for Boston was significantly smaller than the $68 million package offered by the owners of the Encore Casino in Everett.

In response, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria and Revolution President Brian Bilello held a press conference on the same day. Bilello stated that efforts to negotiate a community impact agreement with Boston faced delays, despite reaching out in November after legislation was passed.

DeMaria disputed Wu's claims of potential traffic issues, citing plans for a new Commuter Rail stop and foot bridge to alleviate congestion. He emphasized that tax revenue would go to Everett, not Boston, and traffic improvements would be addressed through Chapter 91 regulations.

If an agreement is not reached among Everett, Boston, and the Kraft Group by December, the matter will proceed to binding arbitration.
