Broadcaster Cohen criticized Cubs player for missing game at Charlie Kirk memorial

Virginia Tech TPUSA secretary Jacob Taylor appeared on 'America's Newsroom' to discuss the rapid growth of Turning Point USA on college campuses following Charlie Kirk's death.

During his latest broadcast on Thursday, SNY's New York Mets lead broadcaster Gary Cohen did not apologize or refer to his recent criticism of Chicago Cubs player Matt Shaw for missing a game to attend Charlie Kirk's memorial. Cohen did not mention his past remarks when Shaw came up to bat three times on Thursday.

Shaw missed the Cubs’ game last Sunday to attend the memorial service in Glendale. Cohen had initially called Shaw's decision to skip the game for the memorial "weird" during the Mets' game against the Cubs on Tuesday.

Fellow Mets broadcaster Todd Zeile described Shaw's absence as "unprecedented" and noted that the situation was revealed after Shaw was expected to be available in the dugout but was not.

The comments made by Cohen sparked backlash from fans on social media, with some vowing to boycott the team until Cohen apologizes. Kirk’s former chief of staff Mikey McCoy criticized Cohen's remarks in a post on X, expressing disappointment in the backlash faced by Shaw for attending his friend’s memorial.

Shaw explained his decision to attend the memorial, emphasizing his connection with Charlie through their faith and expressing gratitude for his faith and blessings in his life. Shaw stated that he was prepared for any backlash he received for his choice to attend the memorial.

Jackson Thompson, a sports writer for Fox News Digital, covered the story. Thompson has a background in sports journalism, having previously worked for ESPN and Business Insider, and has interviewed notable sports figures such as Usain Bolt, Rob Gronkowski, and Jerry Rice.
