Buffalo Bills' Ed Oliver Cleared of Charges
Ed Oliver, the second-year defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills, has been acquitted of all charges related to his arrest on the evening of May 16 in Houston.
Oliver was initially charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawfully carrying a weapon while passing through a construction zone on Texas State Highway 242. Both charges are misdemeanors in Texas. However, the gun found in Oliver's car was legally permitted in Texas, and the gun charge was dropped when the DWI charge was dismissed.
In a statement, Oliver's attorney Gary Patterson stated that the District Attorney of Montgomery County could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, citing negative blood test results that showed no presence of drugs. Patterson criticized the police investigation, emphasizing Oliver's innocence and the inaccuracies in the initial report.
The beer can found in Oliver's vehicle was used as a spit can for his chewing tobacco, not for drinking. The Buffalo Bills expressed their support for Oliver, acknowledging the legal process and his cooperation. With all charges cleared, Oliver can now focus on the upcoming training camp and season.
Oliver was reported by another motorist for reckless driving and failure to maintain a lane on the night in question. After a field sobriety test, he was arrested based on his nervous appearance. While Oliver may still face NFL discipline, being a first-time offender with all charges dropped makes it unlikely.
