Buxton town center revitalization plan unveiled

Developers have revealed a vision of a new public space near the River Wye as part of plans to replace a shopping center in Buxton with shops, bars, restaurants, and housing.

In 2022, High Peak Borough Council (HPBC) acquired The Springs in Buxton with £6.6m of government funding and selected property company Capital and Centric to oversee the project.

After a consultation involving 700 participants, the proposal includes creating a new public area by opening up the River Wye.

John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital and Centric, expressed enthusiasm about unveiling the River Wye and integrating it into a public space for the town's benefit.

HPBC noted that the majority of feedback from the consultation favored a town center featuring independent shops, restaurants, and bars, with a design reflecting Buxton's historical appeal.

Tim Heatley, co-founder of the development firm, referred to Buxton as a "sleeping giant" and anticipated that the project would enhance tourism and encourage young adults to remain in the town.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, the council's deputy leader, highlighted the significance of showcasing the River Wye as a key aspect of Buxton's identity and welcomed the addition of new public spaces based on community feedback.
