Call for Devolved Parliament in Cornwall
A demonstration took place at Lemon Quay in Truro on Saturday, where around 100 people gathered in support of Cornwall having its own devolved parliament amid the English Devolution Bill progressing in Westminster.
The event was organized following a call from Cornwall Council for official recognition of Cornwall as the fifth nation of the UK. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government stated that they aim to empower strategic authorities and ensure Cornwall benefits from devolution.
Attendees expressed their belief that self-rule would improve Cornwall. The demonstration was organized by various groups, including Kernow Rydh, Cornwall Resists, and trade unions.
Mebyon Kernow Councillor Sam Carmichael highlighted the potential benefits of devolved powers, such as control over planning and the ability to raise taxes on second homes to address housing affordability issues.
Participants emphasized the desire for Cornwall to have its own identity and recognition, with one person stating the importance of raising awareness and gaining the respect Cornwall deserves.
