Chicago Blackhawks Secure Frank Nazar with Long-Term Deal
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Frank Nazar to a seven-year contract extension with a $6.59 million cap hit per season. The new contract will start from the 2026-27 season as Nazar still has one year left on his current entry-level deal. The team aims for Nazar and Connor Bedard to lead as the Blackhawks' top centers for the next decade.
Nazar had a strong finish to last season, scoring five goals and four assists in eight games in April. He then excelled at the World Championships, contributing six goals and six assists in 10 games as Team USA won the tournament. Blackhawks' general manager Kyle Davidson praised Nazar's performance and highlighted his speed and playmaking abilities.
Selected as the No. 13 pick in the 2022 draft, Nazar joined the Blackhawks after a successful college season. Despite starting in the AHL, he was called up mid-season and finished with 12 goals and 14 assists in 53 games. Nazar expressed his desire to continue playing in Chicago long-term, appreciating the city and the team's organization.
The Blackhawks' decision to secure Nazar with a long-term deal at a reasonable rate is seen as a strategic move. Nazar's potential to perform at a high level could make the contract a valuable asset as the salary cap increases. Comparatively, Colorado signed Nathan MacKinnon to a similar deal out of his entry-level contract, which turned out to be a team-friendly agreement as MacKinnon's career progressed.
Nazar's extension prompts discussions about Bedard's future contract negotiations, as he is also approaching the end of his entry-level deal. Bedard expressed his commitment to the team and a strong relationship with the organization, indicating no rush to finalize an extension. Both players are viewed as key assets for the Blackhawks' future success.
