College football program shares Drake Maye highlights after Belichick Patriots ban.
North Carolina's official Twitter account sparked discussion in college football on Monday. A report by 247Sports/CBS editor Ross Martin revealed that UNC staff were instructed not to post about the New England Patriots. This directive explained the account's silence following the Patriots' victory over the Buffalo Bills, led by quarterback Drake Maye, a former UNC player who was drafted third in the 2024 NFL Draft.
College programs often share highlights and messages about their alumni in the NFL over the weekend. While there is no set rule on how schools should acknowledge their former players' achievements, the absence of any mention of Maye's performance in defeating the undefeated Bills drew attention, especially given head coach Bill Belichick's ties to UNC.
The UNC Football account had previously highlighted Patriots touchdowns, including Maye's contributions in a game against the Miami Dolphins. Amid the scrutiny, the account posted a video comparing Maye's plays as a Tar Heel to his recent performance and shared highlights of former UNC players in the NFL.
The social media focus on UNC came after a significant loss to Clemson and a post by former coach Mack Brown praising Maye's success. Belichick, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowl wins, had a public dispute with team owner Robert Kraft and restricted Patriots scouts from UNC facilities.
Belichick mentioned being unwelcome at UNC's facility, reciprocating the sentiment towards UNC staff at the Patriots' facility. Coach Mike Vrabel later clarified that Belichick was indeed welcome at the Patriots' facility.
