Colts' Daniel Jones outshines Anthony Richardson in quarterback showdown.

The Indianapolis Colts have named Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Shane Steichen announced this decision, stating that Jones won the quarterback competition over Anthony Richardson. Jones signed a one-year deal with the Colts during the offseason.

Jones, 28 years old, previously played for the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. He has started 69 career games, holding a record of 24-44-1. Last season, he completed 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Richardson, on the other hand, has struggled in his first two NFL seasons, with an 8-7 record in 15 games.

Throughout training camp and the preseason, Jones and Richardson split first-team reps. In the preseason games, Jones completed 17 of 32 passes for 245 yards, while Richardson completed 8 of 14 passes for 94 yards. Richardson has also been more effective as a runner, with 635 rushing yards and 10 career rushing touchdowns.

The Colts finished last season with an 8-9 record, placing second in the AFC South. Coach Steichen is hopeful that Jones can lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
