Nico Williams Surprises by Signing New Athletic Bilbao Contract

Nico Williams Signs New Contract with Athletic Bilbao

Nico Williams has signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao, putting an end to speculation linking him with Barcelona. The winger's contract will now run until 2035, as announced on Athletic Bilbao's official website. Williams expressed his commitment, stating, 'When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is the heart. I'm where I want to be, with my people, this is my home. Aupa Athletic!'

A product of Bilbao's youth system, the 22-year-old has played 167 senior games for the club, scoring 31 goals and providing 30 assists. He recently won the Copa Del Rey in the 2023-24 season and is gearing up to participate in the Champions League with the club next season.

Despite reports of Barcelona reaching an agreement with Williams, the deal fell through due to Barcelona's proposal to pay the transfer fee in installments. Williams' release clause has now surged by more than 50%, standing at €58 million (£50 million).

Besides Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal had also shown interest in the Spanish international, who contributed to Spain's victory in Euro 2024. Williams' agent's demands and Barcelona's financial constraints were key factors that hindered the potential move.

With Williams staying at Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona will need to explore other options in their search for a new winger. Marcus Rashford, who has been linked with the Catalan club and is currently out of favor at Manchester United, could be a potential target.

Williams' brother, Inaki, remains at Athletic Bilbao and has amassed over 400 appearances for the club.
