Footballer Diogo Jota passed away in a car crash in northern Spain at the age of 28. His final social media post was published less than 24 hours before the tragedy.
Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, just two weeks prior to the crash. His final Instagram post featured a video of the couple tying the knot, captioned "A day we will never forget."
The crash occurred on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province. Emergency services confirmed the deaths of two individuals at the scene.
Jota's death was confirmed by Pedro Proenca, head of the Portuguese Football Federation. He described Jota as an extraordinary person and a respected teammate and opponent.
The footballer had previously expressed his joy and pride after winning both the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal.
Jota began his career at Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2016. He later played on loan at Porto and Wolves before joining Liverpool in 2018 for £41 million.
