An unleashed dog killed around two dozen turtle hatchlings on a beach in Florida, officials reported. Conservationists discovered the 23 dead hatchlings on the shore in Atlantic Beach, Duval County, while patrolling for nest damage after Hurricane Erin. The dog responsible for the killings has not been identified and is still at large.

City officials expressed dismay over the incident, emphasizing the efforts made by Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers to safeguard the nests and protect the turtles. They highlighted the importance of being cautious around nesting areas and keeping pets on leashes to prevent such tragedies. Owners can face legal consequences if their pets harm federally protected species like sea turtles under the Endangered Species Act.

The Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol advised locals to maintain a safe distance from nesting zones, especially in the mornings when baby sea turtles typically emerge from their nests. The recent killings follow a previous incident where nests were destroyed by a dog in Ponte Vedra Beach, located about 7 miles south of Atlantic Beach. Authorities found paw prints near the damaged nests and took measures to protect the remaining ones.

To report loose dogs on the beach, the public can contact the police non-emergency number at (904) 247-5859. Incidents involving sea turtles can be reported by calling (904) 613-6081.
