Mastodon’s former lead guitarist and singer, Brent Hinds, aged 51, passed away in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta. The Atlanta Police Department reported that he collided with a BMW SUV whose driver failed to yield while turning left. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Hinds had left the heavy metal band in March after 25 years and was identified as the deceased individual by the Fulton County medical examiner’s office.
Hinds's bandmates expressed deep sorrow over his death in a joint Instagram statement. They described their shock and grief over the loss of a creative force with whom they had shared many successes and created music that touched many hearts. They requested privacy for Brent's family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
Born in Alabama in 1974, Hinds moved to Atlanta to pursue music. There, he met his future Mastodon bandmate Troy Sanders and, along with drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher, founded Mastodon in 2000. Hinds took over lead vocals after the departure of the group's original singer. The band released eight albums, with notable hits like “Blood and Thunder,” “The Motherload,” and “Oblivion.” They won a Grammy in 2018 for Best Metal Performance.
After 25 years with Mastodon, Hinds had a falling out with his bandmates, leading to his departure in March. He was temporarily replaced for live performances, and a permanent replacement has not been confirmed yet.
