Canadian Singer JP Saxe Criticized for National Anthem Rendition at World Series
Canadian singer JP Saxe faced heavy criticism from fans online for his rendition of the national anthem before Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night. Saxe, who hails from Toronto but resides in Los Angeles, sang 'O Canada' as the Toronto Blue Jays geared up to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in California.
However, Saxe's performance did not sit well with fans who lambasted his vocals and accused him of altering the lyrics. Instead of singing 'Our home and native land,' he seemingly sang 'Our home on native land,' much to the disappointment of Canadian viewers.
Some fans expressed their displeasure, with one stating, "Shockingly embarrassing. Canada has a plethora of better singers that would've represented us properly." Another viewer commented, "Im an American, and that was the WORST rendition of the Canadian Anthem I've ever heard!! MLB owes the Canadians an apology."
Following the intense game between the Blue Jays and the Dodgers, one fan humorously remarked, "18 innings in and my ears were still bleeding." Saxe, known for his 2019 Grammy-nominated track 'If the World Was Ending,' shared videos on Instagram before his performance, including one where he joked, 'Can the singer pinch hit?'
Despite the anthem controversy, the Dodgers emerged victorious in a thrilling 6-5 win over the Blue Jays in the 18th inning, in what was one of the most epic games in World Series history. Freddie Freeman's 406-foot walk-off home run sealed the win for the Dodgers in a game that lasted six hours and 39 minutes, matching the longest innings in World Series history.
The Dodgers, as the reigning World Series champions, now lead 2-1 going into Game 4 on Tuesday.
