Two people have died and nine others have been injured after a gunman drove into a church in Michigan and opened fire, according to police.
The incident occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, located 60 miles northwest of Detroit, during a Sunday service that draws hundreds of attendees.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from nearby Burton, Michigan, allegedly set part of the building on fire. The fire has been contained, but officials have cautioned that additional victims may be found inside.
Police shot and killed the alleged shooter, confirming that there is no longer a threat to the public.
During the service, the gunman drove a vehicle into the building and proceeded to open fire with an assault-style rifle, injuring multiple individuals, according to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye.
Eight people with gunshot wounds are receiving medical treatment, with seven in stable condition and one in critical condition.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack and are searching the suspect's property and examining his cell-phone records.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed the incident and expressed prayers for peace and healing for all affected.
President Donald Trump and US Attorney General Pam Bondi have both commented on the incident, with Bondi describing the violence at a place of worship as "heartbreaking and chilling."
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has condemned the violence, emphasizing that any form of violence, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.
