Fatal shooting in New York office leaves police officer dead

A New York City police officer, who is expecting his third child with his wife, was one of four people killed in a shooting at a high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan during Monday rush hour.

The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, traveled from Las Vegas, but his motive remains unclear. He was later found dead with a self-inflicted wound, with additional ammunition discovered in his car.

The gunman entered the office building armed with a rifle and opened fire in the lobby and on an upper floor.

The shooting, which occurred in the heart of New York City, caused pedestrians to flee as police warned of an active shooter.

The New York Police Department released a photo of the slain police officer, Didarul Islam, who leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.

KPMG US, an accounting firm with offices in the building, expressed condolences to the victims and praised the bravery of security personnel and law enforcement.

The building houses various businesses, including the National Football League and investment firm Blackstone.

During a press conference led by Mayor Eric Adams, officials stated that it is too early to determine the suspect's motive or any connections to New York or the victims.

The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, had a documented mental health history and had traveled through several states before arriving in New York.

The suspect was armed with an M4 rifle and a revolver, and surveillance footage captured the attack inside the building.

Mayor Adams confirmed that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and expressed condolences to the victims.

The slain officer, Officer Islam, had served in the NYPD for over three years and was an immigrant from Bangladesh.

Lawmakers and officials expressed sorrow and offered prayers for the victims of the tragic incident in Manhattan.
