FBI Director clashes with Democrats on Kirk and Epstein
Democratic Senator Cory Booker accused Kash Patel of lying about firing FBI agents as retaliation for political investigations during a hearing on Tuesday. Patel, the FBI director, faced questions on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Jeffrey Epstein, and the dismissal of agents.
Patel testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in his first oversight hearing as the director of the US federal law enforcement bureau. He defended the FBI's handling of the Charlie Kirk murder investigation and addressed criticism over a social media post prematurely announcing an arrest.
During the hearing, Patel acknowledged the need for more careful wording in his posts. Booker accused Patel of firing FBI agents as retribution for political reasons. The Associated Press reported that five agents and top executives were abruptly dismissed the previous month.
Booker criticized Patel for removing experienced FBI agents and shifting the agency's focus towards Donald Trump's immigration policies. Patel defended his leadership, stating that America is safer under his direction and criticized Booker for spreading false information.
Tensions escalated as Patel and Booker engaged in a heated exchange, prompting committee chair Senator Chuck Grassley to intervene. The confrontation led Booker to leave the room, accusing Patel of disrespecting senators.
Patel also clashed with Democratic Senator Adam Schiff over the handling of issues related to Epstein. Patel accused Schiff of being a political fraud during their argument. Patel, a former lawyer nominated by President Trump, faced controversy during his confirmation process, narrowly securing the position with a 51-49 Senate vote in February.
