Xbox's Cancelled Dreams: A Blow to Gamers
Xbox Layoffs and Project Cancellations
Xbox recently announced significant layoffs and project cancellations, despite reporting profitability in their expansion strategy. While the extent of job cuts was previously unknown, reports indicate the impact extends beyond job losses to high-profile projects.
Notable cancellations include:
- Perfect Dark: Despite investing in a dedicated studio and renowned developers, the long-gestating shooter has been completely scrapped, leading to the closure of The Initiative studio.
- Everwild: Rare's new IP has been cancelled, despite previous praise from Xbox leadership.
- Romero Shooters: An unnamed shooter from Romero Games lost funding and faces an uncertain future.
- ZeniMax MMORPG: Development of a new MMORPG from the team behind Elder Scrolls Online was halted.
- Warcraft Rumble: Support for the Warcraft mobile game will cease, with no new content forthcoming.
Additional layoffs affected teams working on Forza Motorsport, Call of Duty, Blizzard mobile projects, and Halo Studios. Approximately 200 jobs were eliminated at King, Microsoft's mobile division. Social teams at Blizzard and some staff at Halo Studios were also affected.
These layoffs follow similar cuts made 18 months ago, which included the closure of Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks.
