Gibbs gains only 19 yards on nine carries

The Green Bay Packers limited Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs to a record-low receiving performance in their 27-13 victory at Lambeau Field to kick off the season.

Gibbs, a two-time Pro Bowler, rushed nine times for 19 yards and caught 10 passes for 31 yards. His receiving yards set a new NFL record low for a player with at least 10 catches in a single game, making him the fifth player in league history to achieve this feat.

The previous record was held by Alvin Kamara, who gained 33 yards on 13 receptions during a 2023 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Despite catching all 10 targets, Gibbs averaged just 3.1 yards per reception on Sunday, a significant drop from his 9.9-yard average in 2024. His success rate on catches was 40.0%, with only one catch resulting in a first down.

The Packers' defense played a key role in containing Gibbs, focusing on keeping plays in front of them and swarming to the ball. Despite Gibbs' playmaking ability, the Packers effectively limited his yardage by tackling well and defending against his receptions.

Gibbs, who had nearly 2,000 total yards last season, typically gained over 100 yards in games where he had at least 19 touches. However, in the game against Green Bay, he was held to just 50 total yards, marking a significant decrease in his usual production.

In total, Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 34 touches but only managed 93 total yards, averaging approximately 2.7 yards per touch.
