Grigor Dimitrov Retires from Wimbledon Match Leading in Two Sets
Grigor Dimitrov was leading against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon when he retired due to an injury, missing a chance for an upset against the world No 1.
Dimitrov was ahead 6-3 7-5 in their fourth-round match on Centre Court. However, at 2-2 in the third set, he appeared to have a pectoral issue and had to retire.
Physios checked on the 34-year-old Bulgarian on the grass and courtside, where he broke down in tears. Dimitrov left the court briefly before returning to announce he could not continue.
This retirement marked Dimitrov's fifth consecutive one at a grand slam. Sinner, who had also faced an injury earlier in the match, expressed sympathy for Dimitrov, calling him an incredible player and a good friend.
Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian pursuing his fourth major title, will now face Ben Shelton, the 10th seed, in the next round at Wimbledon.
