Vice-President JD Vance has asked for prayers for the "victims and first responders" in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.

In a statement on social media, Vance mentioned the FBI's presence at the scene and the administration's monitoring of the situation.

The suspect in the incident has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a Marine Corps veteran, according to CBS, the BBC's US media partner.

Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack and are scheduled to provide an update at 20:00 local time (00:00 GMT).

Following the events at a church in Michigan, the New York Police Department and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have announced increased security measures at religious institutions in their respective cities.

Former President Donald Trump described the incident as "yet another targeted attack on Christians" in the US.

The shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan follows a previous church shooting in Minneapolis last month.

The suspect in the Michigan shooting, Thomas Jacob Sanford, was killed by officers in the church car park.

Nine people were injured in the incident, with seven in stable condition and one in critical condition. Two individuals, including the suspect, have died.

The Henry Ford Genesys Hospital is treating the injured from the shooting and fire at the church.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed sorrow for the Grand Blanc community and condemned violence in places of worship.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement acknowledging the "tragic act of violence" and expressed gratitude for the support and prayers received.

The incident occurred in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, a small town located about 60 miles northwest of Detroit.
