India's Modi advocates self-reliance in speech amidst US tariff threat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India marked the country's 78th Independence Day by emphasizing the need for self-reliance and local manufacturing. Speaking from New Delhi's Red Fort, he highlighted the importance of producing various goods within India, focusing on sectors like agriculture and technology. Modi did not directly address the recent additional tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump but stressed the significance of protecting Indian interests.

The push for self-reliance in manufacturing has gained momentum due to global trade tensions and disruptions in the supply chain. Modi urged for a stronger India by promoting the use of domestically made products and announced plans for the production of semiconductor chips and critical minerals within the country. Trump's tariffs have raised concerns about India's exports to the US, impacting sectors such as textiles, footwear, and gems.

In response to the recent military conflict with Pakistan, Modi announced the establishment of a new defense system named 'Sudarshan Chakra'. He emphasized India's stance against nuclear threats and stated that the country would not tolerate any form of nuclear blackmail. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed plans to create an "Army Rocket Force Command" to enhance Pakistan's defense capabilities, without providing further details.

India and Pakistan celebrate their Independence Days around the same time, with both countries gaining independence in 1947 following the partition of British India. The partition led to widespread violence and mass migrations, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement of millions of people.
