Insider Insights: D-Backs' and Rays' Plans, Cedric Mullins & More

The 2025 MLB trade deadline is being covered live by The Athletic. Less than five days remain until the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on July 31. Major-league sources are providing insights as the deadline approaches.

The Arizona Diamondbacks initially planned to trade either right-hander Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly, but the demand for quality starting pitchers is making them reconsider. Both Gallen and Kelly could be traded if the team receives strong offers.

The Diamondbacks are setting a high bar for potential trades to exceed the value of compensation draft picks they would get if Gallen and Kelly rejected qualifying offers. The team is concerned about having enough pitching for the rest of the season but may conduct a more extensive sale if they receive suitable offers.

Third baseman Eugenio Suárez is likely to be traded, and outfielder Randal Grichuk is also expected to move. The Tampa Bay Rays are considering trading players like first baseman Yandy Díaz as their position on trading certain players softens.

The Texas Rangers are looking to add players as they trend positively, focusing on a high-leverage reliever and potentially another starter. The Baltimore Orioles are open to trading several players, including potential free-agent starting pitchers and outfielders like Cedric Mullins and Ramón Laureano.

The Minnesota Twins are listening to offers for pitchers under club control for additional seasons, while the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants are expected to be aggressive buyers due to the open competition for the third NL wild card spot. The Padres, currently holding the wild card position, are facing challenges and may not have the resources for big additions.
