An Israeli airstrike struck the fourth floor of the main hospital in southern Gaza on Monday, killing at least eight people, including four journalists, according to health officials. The civil defense rescue agency in Gaza reported that a total of 15 people died in the attack.

Mahmud Bassal, a civil defense spokesman, confirmed that among the 15 victims were four journalists and one civil defense member. The strike involved two missiles hitting the hospital in quick succession as rescue teams arrived, as stated by the health ministry.

Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, the largest in southern Gaza, has faced repeated raids and bombings during the 22-month conflict, leading to critical shortages of supplies and staff. The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged carrying out the attack and expressed regret for any harm caused to non-combatants, including journalists.

Among the journalists killed were Hossam al-Masri from Reuters, Mohammed Salama from Al Jazeera, and freelance journalists Maryam Abu Daqqa and Moaz Abu Taha. The Associated Press confirmed that Abu Daqqa had freelanced for them since the start of the Gaza war.

The Foreign Press Association and the Committee to Protect Journalists strongly criticized the attack, calling for accountability and an end to violence against media workers. The IDF has faced scrutiny over its military operations in Gaza, including targeted strikes on individuals alleged to be Hamas members.

In previous incidents, hospitals in Gaza have been targeted by Israeli strikes, with Israel claiming they were used by militants. The international community has been urged to intervene and ensure the safety of journalists working in conflict zones like Gaza.
