Five years after Christopher Columbus statues were vandalized across America, the issue has resurfaced ahead of Columbus Day. Socialist NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani faced criticism for a photo showing him flipping off a Columbus statue in 2020.

Basil Russo, president of the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations, expressed disappointment in Mamdani's actions, urging him to show respect to the Italian American community. Mamdani defended his past tweets while Mayor Eric Adams sought landmark status for Columbus statues to prevent their removal.

Russo highlighted the historical significance of Columbus Day, linking it to a tragic event in 1891 involving Italian immigrants. He emphasized the contributions of Italian Americans and their role in building American cities. Despite the pushback, President Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Columbus Day, receiving applause from his Cabinet.
