James Gunn Reveals Marvel Star's Unexpected Superman Appearance

Director James Gunn explained that he chose Bradley Cooper to play Superman's father in the new movie because he needed someone with the right "stature" for the role. Cooper portrays Jor-El, Superman's birth father, a character previously played by Marlon Brando in the 1978 film.

Gunn, who directed Cooper in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, highlighted Cooper's suitability for the role, emphasizing the importance of finding an actor who could embody the character's essence. He mentioned that many actors suggested for the role were too old, and Cooper, being a friend, agreed to take on the part.

The film features David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the antagonist Lex Luther. Other cast members include Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Gabriela de Faría in various roles.

A review by Clarisse Loughrey in The Independent praised the movie, stating that it revitalizes the superhero genre and captures the essence of Superman's story. The film incorporates elements from the character's history while still showcasing James Gunn's distinctive directorial style.

Superman has performed well at the box office, grossing $96.5 million globally within its opening weekend, surpassing initial estimates. The movie earned $56.5 million domestically on its opening day, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2025 so far.

Superman is currently showing in theaters and has been well-received by audiences worldwide.
