Jimmy Kimmel criticizes CBS for axing Stephen Colbert's show

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert confirmed the end of his long-running show, expressing disappointment to his audience during a taping of the Thursday night episode.

CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show on Thursday, citing a "financial decision" and praising Colbert as "irreplaceable." In response, fellow late-night host Jimmy Kimmel showed support for Colbert through an Instagram story message.

Kimmel's message included words of encouragement for Colbert and a playful reference to CBS's show The Big Bang Theory and its spin-offs. CBS and Paramount bosses jointly stated that The Late Show will conclude its historic run in May 2026, emphasizing Colbert's significance in late-night television.

Colbert informed his audience about the show's impending end, acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans. He clarified that the decision was not due to performance issues but was solely a financial choice made by the network.

Colbert, known for his work on The Daily Show, took over The Late Show in 2015 after David Letterman. The show is filmed at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in Manhattan, New York City, and recent Nielsen ratings show it leading its time slot with a growing viewership.
