Jose Mourinho Departs Fenerbahce as Head Coach
Jose Mourinho has departed from his role as Fenerbahce head coach after one season with the club. The 62-year-old took charge of the Istanbul team in 2024, leading them to a second-place finish in the Turkish Super Lig, 11 points behind champions Galatasaray.
Under Mourinho's leadership, Fenerbahce was knocked out of the Turkish Cup in the quarter-finals and exited the Europa League in the round of 16 against Rangers. His departure follows the team's failure to secure a spot in the Champions League group stage after losing in the playoffs to Benfica, forcing them to compete in the Europa League this season.
Fenerbahce has accumulated four points from their first two league matches and will face Genclerbirligi on Sunday. Mourinho's exit coincides with Besiktas parting ways with head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
During Mourinho's tenure, Fenerbahce won 37 out of 62 matches, achieving a win rate of 59.7%. Throughout his managerial career spanning over two decades, Mourinho has claimed 26 trophies, including the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, as well as league titles with Chelsea and Real Madrid. He also had successful spells at Manchester United, where he won the EFL Cup and Europa League in 2017, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Mourinho's previous role at Roma saw him guide the team to victory in the Europa Conference League in 2022, followed by a loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final the next season. In October 2024, Mourinho expressed his readiness to return to the Premier League after leaving Fenerbahce.
