Late Goal by Djordje Mihailovic Secures Draw for Toronto
Djordje Mihailovic scored in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time, helping Toronto FC secure a 2-2 draw with the Chicago Fire in Chicago on Saturday night.
Mihailovic scored his 10th goal, the first in his eighth appearance for Toronto (5-13-14). His previous nine goals were scored in 24 appearances with the Colorado Rapids earlier in the season.
The Fire (15-11-7), who recently secured their first postseason appearance since 2017 with a 5-3 win over Inter Miami, initially fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute due to an own goal by defender Jack Elliott.
Elliott later redeemed himself by scoring in the 71st and 89th minutes, both assisted by Philip Zinckernagel. This brought Chicago to a 2-1 lead. Elliott now has three goals this season, while Zinckernagel increased his assist count to 15 in his debut season in the league.
Chris Brady made three saves for the Fire, while Sean Johnson stopped four shots for Toronto.
Chicago has scored 66 goals this season, just one shy of the club record set in 2000. The team had a 4-1 record in September for the second time, having achieved the same in 2012.
Chicago had previously beaten Toronto 2-1 on the road on March 15. Toronto currently leads the all-time series 14-13-14.
Toronto will next play Los Angeles FC, while the Fire will close out the regular season on the road against the New England Revolution on Oct. 18.
