Liberty star Breanna Stewart may miss Game 2 after knee injury.
New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart may not play in Game 2 of the team’s first-round series against the Phoenix Mercury due to a left knee injury sustained during overtime of New York’s 76-69 victory on Sunday.
Stewart did not practice on Tuesday following an MRI on Monday, which showed no major issues, as stated by coach Sandy Brondello. The upcoming game is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET in Brooklyn.
Brondello mentioned that Stewart's availability will be determined on the day of the game. Stewart was injured with 3:01 left in overtime while attempting a layup. Despite the injury, she continued to play for nearly a minute before requesting to be substituted out.
Stewart had missed 13 games earlier in the season due to a right knee injury and had undergone surgery on that knee in March. She has been a key player for the Liberty since joining the team in 2023.
In case Stewart is unable to play, forward Kennedy Burke is expected to see increased playing time. Burke, who started nine games this season, has been practicing with the starters and could fill in for Stewart if needed.
