Liverpool fans face 'degrading' treatment in Istanbul; police intervene to prevent clashes.
Liverpool supporters have criticized UEFA over the conditions they are facing before their Champions League match against Galatasaray in Istanbul. The match will take place at the 53,978-capacity RAMS Park.
Fans have raised concerns about the travel arrangements, which involve a long bus journey without toilet facilities and the need to surrender personal items to enter the stadium. Liverpool's travel advice instructs fans to use free shuttle buses from Sultanahmet Square to the stadium and warns that other means of transport will not be allowed access.
Fans will undergo searches before and after entering the stadium, with items like power banks, makeup, and ear pods being confiscated. The Liverpool Supporters Union, Spirit of Shankly, has expressed disappointment over the treatment of fans and stated that similar issues occurred with Manchester United and Tottenham supporters in Istanbul.
UEFA had faced criticism following the 2022 Champions League final and had made compensation settlements with fans. Despite this, Spirit of Shankly claims that lessons have not been learned, and fans are still facing restrictions and uncertainties regarding essential items like medical equipment.
The group plans to collaborate with other supporter organizations to advocate for better treatment of fans by UEFA. Journalist David Lynch has also criticized UEFA's handling of the situation, labeling it as a disgrace. A UEFA spokesperson responded by emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for fans.
Galatasaray supporters have attempted to intimidate Liverpool players by setting off fireworks outside the team hotel before the match. Liverpool aims to continue their winning momentum from the previous match against Atletico Madrid when they face Galatasaray, who suffered a heavy defeat in their opening Champions League game.
