Man United May Need New Goalkeeper Due to Andre Onana's Injury

Andre Onana has sustained a hamstring tear during training, ruling him out of Manchester United’s pre-season activities. The goalkeeper's recovery is expected to take between four to six weeks, potentially causing him to miss the team's early Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham. Despite this setback, Onana will still travel with the team for pre-season and receive treatment in the US. However, he will miss several games, including the Premier League Summer Series matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton, as well as friendlies against Leeds and Fiorentina.

The injury occurred during Onana's return to training at Carrington earlier this week, marking his first significant injury. As a result, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton will fill in for him. This situation has left Manchester United contemplating whether to sign another goalkeeper before the transfer window closes. Despite previous links to Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and John Victor of Botafogo, it seems likely that Onana will remain at Old Trafford, especially after Monaco declined to meet United’s valuation of £30 million when inquiring about him last month.

United, who had been focusing on bolstering their attacking options, are now considering the need for a replacement goalkeeper before their first Premier League match against Arsenal on August 17. Onana, who joined United from Ajax in 2023, has shown skill with his feet but has also made errors in shot-stopping during his time at the club. Talks of acquiring Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa have quieted down, and it remains uncertain if the Argentine goalkeeper would accept a backup role or challenge Onana for the No. 1 spot.

The team is set to commence their pre-season games against Leeds in Sweden, followed by matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the US. A fixture against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9 will precede the start of the new season.
