Manchester City player close to signing new long-term deal, fending off Nottingham Forest interest
Rico Lewis is on the verge of signing a new five-year contract with Manchester City, turning down interest from Nottingham Forest. Forest had tried to secure deals for both Lewis and James McAtee, with McAtee joining City for an initial fee of £25 million.
Lewis impressed during City's recent win against Wolves, contributing to Erling Haaland's goal. Talks for a contract extension progressed swiftly this week after initial discussions this summer did not lead to an agreement.
Lewis was left out of the FA Cup final squad in May, sparking speculation about his future at the club. Despite Forest's interest, Lewis expressed his desire to stay at City.
The defender confirmed his commitment to City during media interviews, calling it his 'dream' to play for the team. Negotiations for a new five-year deal, extending his current contract by two years, accelerated this week.
Lewis, who spoke with Pep Guardiola during Forest's pursuit, will receive an improved contract. However, City still needs to sell players to balance their squad. Galatasaray is interested in signing Manuel Akanji and Ederson.
In addition, young defender Callum Doyle is finalizing a move to Wrexham for £8 million, with an initial payment of £5 million by the Championship side.
