Minnesota Lynx Player Criticizes WNBA Commissioner as 'World's Worst Leader'

Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the league office, calling the WNBA leadership the “worst in the world.” Collier, who is also the Women’s National Basketball Players Association vice president, expressed her concerns at a news conference in Minneapolis following her team's loss to the Phoenix Mercury in the semifinals.

Collier accused the league of lacking accountability on important issues, particularly criticizing the officiating. She mentioned that she had tried to address these concerns privately before speaking out publicly. Collier emphasized her worries about the future of the sport and the need for better leadership.

In response to Collier's comments, Engelbert released a statement expressing respect for the players and her commitment to the league's development. Collier, the 2025 WNBA MVP runner-up, did not play in the last game due to an ankle injury sustained in the previous match.

Following the game, Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was fined and suspended for criticizing officiating. Other coaches, including Becky Hammon and Stephanie White, were also fined for similar comments. Collier received support from Reeve, who acknowledged the importance of her voice.

Collier highlighted issues with player compensation and the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. She questioned the league's approach to officiating and the lack of accountability from leadership. Collier urged for changes to be made to ensure the sport's integrity and value for players.
