Montreal NHL Rookie of the Year Signs Lucrative 8-Year Deal
Montreal's Lane Hutson, a young NHL defenseman, has signed a significant contract extension. The Canadiens revealed that Hutson, aged 21, will earn an average of $8.85 million over an eight-year deal agreed upon on Monday, October 13. The $70.8 million contract will commence next season and extend through 2033-34.
Hutson was named the rookie of the year in 2024-25 after achieving six goals and 60 assists. He equaled the NHL record for assists by a rookie defenseman set by Larry Murphy in 1980-81, and his 66 points established a record for a Canadiens rookie defenseman.
Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes expressed confidence in Hutson, stating, "There wouldn't be an eight-year deal if we didn't believe in who you were at your core." Hughes highlighted Hutson's character, commitment to personal growth, and dedication to being a valuable teammate during their recent discussions.
The NHL market for defensemen transitioning from entry-level contracts has seen significant changes this month. Luke Hughes, a defenseman for the New Jersey Devils aged 22, signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with an average of $9 million on October 1. Luke's average salary surpasses that of his All-Star brothers, Quinn ($7.85 million) and Jack ($8 million).
Shortly after, Jackson LaCombe, a defenseman for the Anaheim Ducks, agreed to an eight-year, $72 million extension with the same $9 million cap hit. He is set to become the highest-paid player for the Ducks in the upcoming season.
The current season is the final opportunity for players to sign eight-year contracts. The new collective bargaining agreement stipulates a maximum of seven years for players re-signing with their current teams and six years for those signing with new teams.
