New factory deal to supply tank parts for British Army.
Cook Defence Systems Makes Tank Parts in Stanhope
A new Ministry of Defence contract worth up to £125m has been secured by Cook Defence Systems in Stanhope, County Durham. The contract will involve supplying spare tracks for the British Army's new Challenger 3 tanks and is expected to protect 125 jobs at the factory.
Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard MP, announced the three-year contract, emphasizing that it will not only enhance the Army's capabilities but also sustain skilled jobs in the North East. The factory, part of the William Cook Group, has a long history of producing tracks and armor for tanks dating back to World War Two.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted the factory's significant role in supporting the UK's commitment to Ukraine by providing spare tracks for Ukrainian Army vehicles. This new contract is part of a broader defense investment strategy, which includes increased procurement of artillery ammunition, drones, and combat spares based on insights from recent events in Ukraine.
William Cook, Director of Cook Defence Systems, expressed gratitude for the investment, stating that the firm plays a critical role in supporting the operational independence of the British Army and allied forces. The contract is expected to directly support 125 jobs and facilitate £5m of investment in new equipment within the next year.
