Nintendo to Launch New Virtual Boy for Switch VR

Nintendo is reentering the VR space with a new Virtual Boy, offering retro games and a Virtual Boy accessory for the Switch and Switch 2 starting on Feb. 17 next year. This move was part of several announcements made during a Direct livestream celebrating Mario's 40th anniversary, which also included remasters of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.

The Virtual Boy, a failed stereoscopic game console from 1996, has been revived in recent years through an emulator allowing games to be played on modern VR headsets. Nintendo is now integrating it into the Switch experience, introducing a new library of Switch Online games for Virtual Boy. A red and black accessory is required to play these games, available in plastic for $100 or cardboard for $25.

The plastic Virtual Boy accessory showcased at the Nintendo Direct resembles the original bulky design. It accommodates the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 to play the 3D black and red games. Additionally, a cardboard version is offered for playing the games at a potentially lower price point.

These Virtual Boy games will be accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, with Nintendo planning to release 14 titles over time, including Tetris.

Nintendo has a history of exploring VR, such as the Nintendo Labo VR kit released in 2019 and the 3D display on the Nintendo 3DS. Universal's Mario Kart ride at theme parks and the Mario Kart Live RC car game also incorporate AR technology. Despite this, Nintendo has not shown interest in supporting a plug-in VR or AR headset for the Switch 2. The company's decision to reintroduce the Virtual Boy may reflect a sense of curiosity or nostalgia.
