Oilers secure Jake Walman with 7-year contract, $7M cap hit

Jake Walman has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers for $7 million annually. The team acquired Walman from the San Jose Sharks last season in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick. He quickly integrated into the team, showcasing versatility by playing on both sides and contributing on special teams.

During his time with the Oilers, Walman scored a goal and eight points in 15 regular-season games and added two goals and 10 points in 22 playoff games. The 29-year-old defenseman is expected to play a more significant role in the upcoming season, likely paired with veteran Darnell Nurse on the second defensive line.

Walman, who joined the Oilers from the Detroit Red Wings in February 2023, missed most of the preseason due to an undisclosed injury. His availability for the season opener against the Calgary Flames is uncertain, but he is anticipated to play in the following game against the Vancouver Canucks.
