Olivier Giroud, 38, Secures Victory for Lille in Europa League
Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud became the oldest player to score as a substitute in the Europa League when he netted the winning goal for Lille against Brann. The 38-year-old French international, who joined Lille in July after leaving Los Angeles FC, scored by heading in a cross from Tiago Santos.
Giroud has now scored three goals in five competitive matches for Lille. He struggled to make an impact during his time in the United States, scoring only five goals in 37 games across all competitions. Giroud, France's all-time leading goal scorer, is playing in the French top flight for the first time in 13 years this season.
In the match against Brann, Hamza Igamane opened the scoring for Lille, with Saevar Magnusson equalizing for Brann soon after. Giroud's goal in the 80th minute secured a 2-1 victory for Lille. The team's next game is against Roma on October 2, while Brann will face Utrecht at the same time.
The game ended with Lille winning 2-1. There were attempts from both sides, with saves made by the goalkeepers and substitutions made by both teams. The match saw yellow cards shown and free kicks awarded, with Lille's Mukau receiving a yellow card.
