OpenAI Launches Highly Anticipated GPT-5 Chatbot Upgrade

GPT-5 Released by OpenAI

OpenAI has launched GPT-5, the anticipated upgrade to its ChatGPT AI chatbot. The release follows the success of ChatGPT, powered by the GPT-3 model, which sparked the current AI boom in late 2022.

At the launch event, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, described GPT-5 as a significant advancement, likening it to conversing with a PhD-level expert in various subjects. The new model is designed to excel in communication, writing prose, coding, academic problem-solving, and healthcare assistance.

OpenAI claims that GPT-5 surpasses competitors like Google, X, and Anthropic on standardized benchmarks. The model is said to be more intuitive and safer to interact with, incorporating elements from previous chatbots and more computationally intensive reasoning models.

While some had hoped GPT-5 would represent artificial general intelligence (AGI), Altman positioned it as a major upgrade to GPT-4 and a step towards AGI, albeit not reaching that level yet. The model's cost, with rumors of a $500 million training run, raises questions about its utility for business users.

Despite showcasing its coding abilities by building an online game during the launch, GPT-5 will need to demonstrate its value for professional coding to compete with other AI models like Anthropic AI's Claude. OpenAI aims to address concerns about hallucinations in generative AI models with GPT-5.

AI experts, like cognitive scientist Gary Marcus, anticipate GPT-5 to be an impressive innovation but emphasize the importance of ensuring its reliability and trustworthiness on the path to advanced AI development.
